Diala R. Hawi, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Social Psychology and the Chair of the Psychology Program at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies in Qatar. She earned her PhD in Social Psychology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from the American University of Beirut (AUB). Her previous academic experience includes a 3-year post as Visiting Assistant Professor at Clark University, and a 3-year Instructor post at AUB. Professionally, she was a Clinical and Research Consultant at the Psychiatry Department at AUB-Medical Center, and Psychosocial Project Coordinator and Development Director on UNICEF-sponsored projects. Her research focuses on social issues that stem from conflict and group relations, such as multiple group dynamics, as well as disadvantaged and oppressed status groups. Her more recent projects examine the role of third-party effects, changes in nationalism and patriotism over time, and the implications of multiculturalism/diversity in Arab states. She has recently won two competitive research grants – the Major Research Grant (MRF; Doha Institute) and the National Priorities Research Program grant (NPRP; Qatar National Research Fund) – for two research projects, which span 2 years and 3 years respectively.
