Dr. O’Connell is a university professor at the American University of Sharjah (AUS) and a practicing clinician at the Human Relations Institute and Clinics (HRIC). In her clinical work, Dr. O’Connell works with individuals, couples, and families to help them through the pain, distress, and challenges that may be preventing them from living a fuller and more engaged life. She uses an integrative approach to psychological therapy relying primarily on evidenced-based therapies such as CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) and ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy) and a thorough understanding of the individual in order to tailor a treatment approach that is specific and unique to each person. Licensed in the USA and in Dubai, Dr. O’Connell is a board-certified counselor (NBCC) in the USA. At AUS, Dr. O’Connell teaches courses in psychology and is thrilled to be supporting the new psych major at AUS. In addition to teaching, she also conducts research in the areas of social media, psychological well-being, psychological distress (depression, anxiety, and mindfulness) and basic psychological needs.
